Ford Pickup No. 1 Target For Thieves

Updated Jul 17, 2013

2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty

If you’re in the market for a new Ford truck, there may be one stat you won’t find in a dealership’s display window.

The Ford F-250 crew 4WD has replaced the Cadillac Escalade as the favorite vehicle target for thieves, according to our sister site, Hard Working Trucks.

The statistic comes from the annual survey conducted by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI). The HLDI ranks vehicles with the high rates of insurance claims for theft, with the F-250 coming out as number one in the latest survey.

From 2003 to 2009, the Escalade held the top spot but fell to number six behind the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab and the Ford F-250 pickup.

The study covered claims filed from 2010-2012 and was based on frequency of claims per 1,0000 vehicles.

The F-250 accounts for seven theft claims per 1,0000 insured vehicle years, which is six times the average for all vehicles.

According to HLDI, theft rates are declining with the help of 89 percent of 2012 models featuring ignition immobilizers, which prevent vehicles from being hot-wired.

Pickup claims can result from theft of equipment from the bed of a truck, but HLDI’s data doesn’t distinguish theft of vehicle contents from the theft of the whole vehicle.
