As part of Project EverGreen’s “Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids.” initiative, Walker Elementary School in Ashland, Oregon, had its athletic and recreation fields revived.

Volunteers from the Southern Oregon Landscape Association, Ashland School District and Ashland Little League pitched in to help renovated the school’s athletic fields.

More than 139,000 square feet of turf was revitalized and the first part of the project consisted of cleaning up debris from the playing surface.

The Southern Oregon Landscape Association performed weed removal, applied weed control products and aerated the soil. It also overseeded more than 2,000 pounds of drought-tolerant seed and top-dressing provided by the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance.

The Walker Elementary maintenance staff has committed to the success of the project by performing sustainable water-smart irrigation practices and managing the overseeding process for the next two years.

“Investing in the renovation and revitalization of athletic and recreational green spaces is an investment in a healthier future for children across the country,” said Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen. “Our goal is to make sure that safe, modern green space is available so children can make exercise, athletics and recreation a part of their daily lives.”

Thanks to Project EverGreen’s work, the Ashland Little League will have a safe field to play on and will be able to start a new division.
