Eleven years ago, when Deborah Munoz-Chacon started Sonoran Oasis Landscaping in Tucson, Arizona, she had a clear vision of the market segment she wanted to pursue – namely, homeowners associations. Today, HOAs comprise more than 90 percent of her successful company’s client base.

She didn’t make that happen by wishing it. She did it by focusing on management objectives. Before going out on her own to start Sonoran Oasis, Munoz-Chacon spent over a decade working with a management company, gaining crucial experience in areas such as accounting and human resources.

And while the skills she learned in those early years have paid dividends, perhaps the most valuable product of her management experience was the opportunity to see which business strategies worked and which didn’t.

In the video below, Munoz-Chacon talks about the challenge of building Sonoran Oasis Landscaping from a company with one truck and four employees into one of Arizona’s most successful landscape contractors.
