Greenscapes, a full-service landscaping and snow removal company in Madison, Wisconsin, left a lakefront client happy after completing a major project involving extensive hardscaping, but the undertaking included its share of challenges.

The project is one of six finalists in Total Landscape Care’s photo contest, Landscaper Showcase.

Not least of the project’s challenges, says Bob Wambach, head of Greenscapes’ landscape division, was the amount of demolition required on one side of the property before construction and landscaping work could begin.

Consequently, Wambach assigned two crews to the job for one of the three and a half weeks the total project required.

The lion’s share of the work involved removal of existing walls and portions of the pool’s concrete collar, followed by pouring new concrete, including steps.

Wambach says Greenscapes is expert in working with stone and uses the material regularly. The lakefront project included the installation of Unilock Olde Quarry retaining walls, Unilock Ledgestone steps as well as custom-cut limestone steps.

In addition, the company installed FX Luminaire Luxor lighting with wireless remote control, along with substantial sod and plantings.

Although the collar around the pool remained concrete, Greenscapes replaced the rest of the patio area with brick.

The entire backyard at the home was sodded, while some planting work also was done in the front of the home. None of the front-yard work could be undertaken until the back of the house was complete, as the equipment necessary for the job would have damaged the plantings.

Wambach said the company did extensive repair at the site, including a heavily damaged irrigation system.

Throughout the job – and especially during the demolition – workers separated as much material as possible for recycling, he said.

The satisfied customer has already told Greenscapes to return next year to replace the home’s driveway.
