New England Grows, the Northeast’s largest educational conference and green-industry exposition, is set for Dec. 2-4 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Organizers says the show brings together “the brightest minds in horticulture, landscape and tree care” to share their insights and advice with industry colleagues.

From new plant introductions and disease-management strategies to lean management and eco-friendly landscapes, New England Grows covers a wide range of topics.

Among the key speakers scheduled for this year’s show is Michael Dirr, an authority on woody plants and the award-winning author of several popular books.

Dirr’s talks at New England Grows will be on the themes “In Praise of Noble Trees” and “A Cornucopia of New Flowering Trees & Shrubs: Selection, Use & Culture.” Dirr will also autograph his books at the show.

Another speaker, Rick Darke, will address how an understanding of biodiversity can be put to practical use in residential gardens and community landscapes. His remarks are titled “The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty & Biodiversity.”

Landscape architect Kate Kennen will speak on the topic “Phyto Landscapes: Using Plants to Clean Up Polluted Water, Soil & Air.” She will discuss how phytoremediation plantings can be used to enhance environmental conditions on roadsides, in communities and brownfields.

Meanwhile, Professor John Ball of South Dakota University will address the all-important issue of safety for tree care, landscaping and nursery professionals in “Safety Starts at the Top.” He’ll explain the Haddon Matrix approach to reducing risk.

Participants in New England Grows can choose from more than 30 educational sessions over the course of three days. Continuing education credits (CEUs) from a variety of professional organizations are available at many sessions.

Also on hand, of course, will be some 500 of the industry’s leading vendors. Green industry professionals can check out the latest solutions, view product demonstrations and get hands-on access to the tools, plants and technology they need to grow their businesses.

Registration options start at $29 for all three days of the conference. For the complete agenda or to register, visit NewEnglandGrows.org.
