Out of 465 entries, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has selected 38 professional awards recipients for 2017.
The awards recognize the best of landscape architecture and the projects are judged on criteria such as the quality of design and execution and the value to the community it serves. The categories include general design, analysis and planning, communications, research and residential design from the U.S. and around the world.
The winners will be recognized and given their awards at the ASLA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, on Monday, Oct. 23, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

General Design Category

Award of Excellence
The Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, Texas, was designed by OJB Landscape Architecture and serves a bridge over the eight-lane Woodall Rodgers Freeway. It reconnects the downtown area with neighborhoods up north. The five-acre park has numerous features including a children’s park, great lawn, restaurant, fountain plaza, dog park and botanical garden.
More than half of all the surfaces are permeable allowing 64,000 gallons of stormwater to be intercepted by the landscaping. The community has embraced the space and hold daily free activities such as lectures and fitness classes.

Award of Excellence
Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture created the landscape design for the Birmingham Residence, located in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. Drawing inspiration from contemporary art, the firm created a space that would both complement and soften the architecture. The design team believed that residential landscapes need not be confined to conventional materials and practices.

Storm + Sand + Sea + Strand – Barrier Island Resiliency Planning for Galveston Island State Park by Studio Outside was created as the redevelopment master plan after the barrier island was devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The plan had to anticipate what the site would look like in the next 50 years. Site strategies focused on tasks such as restoring the dunes for habitat, reducing impermeable surfaces by 25 percent. The plan also educates visitors on past, present and future dynamics of the coastline.

Developed by Benjamin George, ASLA, an assistant professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, the Digital Library of Landscape Architecture History (DiLiLAH) is a freely available, online public archive of virtual tours of historical landscapes.
There are currently 40 tours on DiLiLAH containing 2,000 years of history and 24 historic styles and cultures. Users can access informational hotspots on the panoramic tours. The website can serve as a tool to introduce individuals to the field of landscape architecture and has education worksheets teachers can use to incorporate into their lessons.

The Landmark Award

The Landmark Award is presented to a landscape architecture project that was completed between 15 and 50 years ago and retains its original design while contributing to the public realm of the community where it is located.
This year’s Landmark Award goes to the J. Paul Getty Center, which was built over a period of nearly twenty years by OLIN. It is where many Mediterranean and California garden traditions come from with its use of a wide range of plants and focus on cacti and succulents long before the rest of California concerned itself with drought-tolerant plants.
