5 Best Smartphones for Landscapers

SmartphoneOne of your most-valuable team members is your smartphone. You’re either talking, emailing, texting, searching the web, taking project photos, posting on social media or just holding onto it most of the time.

And like with your equipment, you want to make sure you have the right tools for the job. So, make sure you pick the smartphone that fits your needs the best.

Here are the top phones for landscapers, according to Equipment World magazine.

1. Apple iPhone 5S: It might not be the cheapest or most durable phone, but the iPhone (and iPad) is still king when it comes to what app developers support most. After all, what good is the phone when it lacks the best software?

And that’s not to mention the fact that the iPhone might be the most powerful smartphone on the market thanks to the new A7 system-on-a-chip powering it. Then there’s the device’s 8MP camera which is still, by far, the best to be had on a smartphone.

So, our ultimate recommendation is to get the latest iPhone and grab a good case for it. It might not be the perfect solution, but in our minds, it’s the best. And if you absolutely must have Android, any of the other phones on this list are more than capable devices that you’ll be very happy with.

2. Caterpillar B15: While the Galaxy S4 Active went for rugged and sleek, the Caterpillar B15—the company’s first smartphone— goes for rugged with attitude. The device is military spec with an IP67 rating. That means it’s waterproof, dustproof and will survive a 5.9-foot drop to hard concrete. The device can also operate in temperatures ranging from 122F to -4F.

The B15′s 4-inch display isn’t exactly as sharp the other phones on this list, but at 800 x 480, the resolution is more than serviceable on the jobsite. More importantly, the display is protected by very durable Gorilla Glass to protect it from drops and scratches. You can even use this touchscreen with wet hands.

3. Samsung Galaxy S4 Active: The S4 active packs a quick 1.9 gigahertz, quad-core processor but is a little behind on Android releases, running version 4.2 though an update is rumored to be coming soon to bring it to 4.3. Another nice touch? The Active’s touchscreen can be used with gloves which should definitely come in handy on a jobsite or in the cold.

But the real news here is this phone’s durability. The Active’s fully sealed design keeps it safe from dust and operating smoothly when submerged in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. In fact, Samsung encourages you to use the phone in the water. The phone’s 8 megapixel camera features an “Aqua Mode” for underwater picture taking. Plus, you probably won’t have to worry about the S4 Active dying on you halfway through your work day. It features a big 2,600mAh battery.
