Vermeer has added to its line of stump cutters with the new SC552, a 56-horsepower machine that falls about midway in Vermeer’s model range, which begins at 25 horsepower and goes up to a 110-horsepower model.

The Vermeer SC552 stump cutter has a 23-inch cutter wheel diameter and a Kohler diesel Tier 4 Final engine for a maximum cutter-wheel speed of 1,124 rpm.

The new machine is equipped with an operator presence system. Control handles for the boom swing and boom raise/lower are engineered with an operator presence handle design that provides capacitance-sensing capability. Vermeer says the system significantly enhances operator safety.

The machine also features the manufacturer’s “SmartSweep” control system, which monitors engine load and automatically adjust the cutter wheel speed accordingly. In addition to maximizing productivity at the stump, Vermeer says, the control system decreases wear and tear on the machine.

Cutter wheels on the SC552 are fitted with Vermeer’s “Yellow Jacket” cutter system. With universal and reversible carbide-tipped teeth, each tooth has two cutting edges and more side pocket clearance, which limits the pocket rubbing that can cause power loss and premature pocket wear.

By loosening one nut and rotating a tooth, the company says, the operator can quickly be working with an almost new cutting surface.

Landscape contractors will be interested to know the SC552 has outside dual wheels that can be removed, enabling the machine to pass through a 36-inch gate. Further, an auxiliary control station is located at the front of the machine, allowing the operator to stand in-line with – rather than beside – the stump cutter for traveling in narrow areas.
