Man plantingGardening, like many fads of yesteryear, has once again become a popular pastime.

Your customers may enjoy the installation and look of a garden, but they may not initially be into gardening as a hobby. While there are many tasks that accompany maintaining a garden, there are also many benefits your customers may not have considered.

Talk to your customers about what goes in to garden maintenance, after you’ve designed and installed one, and the benefits that accompany it. In time, you may find they have a vested interest in the world of gardening.

Can help save money on food

An obvious benefit of backyard gardening is the fact that your customers can grow edibles. This, in turn, will help them save money and time on grocery shopping.

Not only will it help with groceries, it will also encourage them to eat healthy without splurging on veggies at the store. This also gives them the peace of mind of knowing exactly where their food is coming from and what’s in it.

Can help relieve stress

With the hectic way of the world today, everyone could use just a bit of relaxation time, and gardening can serve as a great outlet for that.

If you have customers that live especially hectic or busy lives, encourage them to disengage from technology and work once they get home by taking a stroll in the garden.

Even if it’s just watering the plants, taking in some natural sunlight or spending time maintaining the garden, a little time outside can work wonders for those suffering from a stressful lifestyle.

Good source of moderate exercise

Along with getting your customers outside, gardening can serve as a good source of low impact, moderate exercise. While it may not burn as many calories as a workout class, according to the fitness app MyFitnessPal, the simple act of gardening for 30 minutes can burn up to 177 calories.

It’s also recommended by most physicians to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle, so why not talk to your customers about how gardening can serve as that workout?

Having plants around also helps purify the air around your customer’s home, and certain plants can help keep harmful pests at bay.

Offers bonding time with family

Watching movies together while cuddled up on the couch is a great way to bond with family, but getting outside to take care of the garden can not only get kids outside, it can also teach them the importance of the environment.

When kids learn at an early age the part they play in the environment, it can greatly impact the way they live their lives in the future. Also, bringing kids into the act of gardening is an excellent way of teaching them how to provide for themselves down the road.

Encourage your customers to use their gardens as a bonding tool, and even help them brainstorm different ways they could get their families more interested.

Serves as a community builder

Along with acting as a family bonding agent, gardens can also encourage community support and gatherings.

Not many of us interact with neighbors anymore, so wouldn’t it be neat if your customer’s garden could serve as the jumping off point to a community builder program?

For customers with enough space for a decent sized garden, consider talking to them about making it a community garden once it’s established and growing.

Gardens tend to produce more than enough food for one family, so why not share the wealth with those around the neighborhood? It’s a great way for your customers to get to know their neighbors, not waste excess veggies and encourage better health practices all around the neighborhood.
