Private equity-backed Monarch Landscape Holdings has tapped green industry veteran Jeffrey Colton as president of its construction division. Colton, who has 32 years of landscaping experience, will be based in Northern California.

Monarch is a family of landscaping companies with total annual revenue of more than $80 million and over 1,000 employees. Those companies include San Jose, California-based Jensen Landscape; Northwest Landscape Services, which is headquartered in Woodinville, Washington; and Redmond, Washington-based Signature Landscape Services. In addition to California and Washington, the Monarch companies have operations in Oregon and Idaho.

“The growth of Monarch is anchored on people who know the landscape business inside and out, and Jeff’s addition certainly strengthens our organization for continued expansion,” said Brian Helgoe, CEO of Monarch.

Before joining Monarch, Colton served as senior vice president and regional manager of ValleyCrest Companies in Northern California.

“Joining Monarch is an exciting new chapter in my landscape career,” Colton said, “and I embrace the chance to return to my entrepreneurial roots building a company.”

Monarch was formed in May 2015 and is backed by equity partner One Rock Capital Partners LLC.

Colton boasts a deep landscape pedigree: His father, Stanley Colton, worked at ValleyCrest Companies for nearly 50 years. His uncle, Burton S. Sperber, founded ValleyCrest, while his cousin, Richard A. Sperber, served as chairman of the board of ValleyCrest Companies.
