Ditch Witch Groundbreaking Radar

PERRY, Okla. ” The Ditch Witch organization recently unveiled a ground-penetrating radar unit that can detect both metallic and non-metallic pipes and cables to depths of up to 19 feet (6 m), depending on soil conditions and antenna selection. The Ditch Witch® 2150GR features 5.5 mph (9 km/h) survey speed and digitally controlled radar for faster, cleaner images. The rugged, wheel-based unit is easy to transport”it folds to fit in a standard car trunk”and offers a choice of two antennae for shallow or deep surveys.

Municipalities, subsurface utility engineers, school systems, and utility companies with significant infrastructure will be the primary users of the 2150GR, an innovative locating product from the Ditch Witch organization, the only company in the underground construction industry with its own brand of tracking and locating electronics.

According to Product Manager John Bieberdorf, one of the 2150GR™s more outstanding characteristics is its ability to survey in both forward and reverse directions. Whether you™re pushing it across a road or pulling it up the side of a ditch, the 2150GR will give you a good survey on any surface, says Bieberdorf. Our unit has two wheels instead of four, so the antenna touches the ground, improving the strength of the signal and resulting in cleaner, more accurate surveys.

The user-friendly 2150GR, which offers Windows®-based data recording and storage capabilities, enables the operator to manually input landmarks such as water hydrants and sewer drains, for more accurate survey maps. Its radar control is four times faster than that of competitive models, so operators can essentially work up to four times faster. And it comes with an autocalibrating filter that provides easy operation.

Municipalities and utility companies will be exceptionally receptive to this new device, says Bieberdorf. For these entities, the 2150GR represents damage prevention, he says. A lot of their maps are outdated, so when it comes time to locate their infrastructure, the 2150GR can potentially save them a lot of trouble. The 2150GR essentially pays for itself by reducing expensive hand-digging to locate utilities.
