Seeing Is Believing: The Ditch Witch 752 Tracker And 752 Display

PERRY, Okla. ” The Ditch Witch organization, the only company in the underground construction industry with its own brand of tracking and locating electronics, has significantly modified its popular 750 Tracker/750 Display system to include improved heat-sensing capabilities, greater water and shock resistance, and the addition of seven channels to the radio component. The 752 Tracker/752 Display system is designed to work with Ditch Witch directional drilling beacons to provide vital information during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations.

The 752 Tracker™s three primary methods of operation”walkover beacon tracking, remote guidance, and line locate mode”provide comprehensive tracking and guidance data for shallow bores (as shallow as 9 inches/229 mm), deep bores (up to 70 feet/21 m), or a combination of the two. Its 12-segment clock face indicates the roll angle of the tool face, and pitch angle is displayed using both up/down arrows and numerical percentages. For greater shock and water resistance, the upgraded 752 Tracker is manufactured with high-impact Xenoy® plastic, an extremely durable material commonly used in the production of automobile bumpers.

The 752 Display can receive data from as far as 2000 feet (610 m) from the 752 Tracker, store up to ten jobs of 254 pipes each, and provide downloads to the compatible Ditch Witch Trac Management System Plus for as-drilled maps. The unit uses left/right arrow indicators as well as signal strength to help track the beacon during the bore. The 752 Display also provides beacon temperature in five-degree increments. When it senses temperatures of 170º or greater, it flashes and beeps to alert the operator.

To eliminate crosstalk between rigs, seven channels were added to the new 752 Tracker and 752 Display. However, channels 1 and 2 still communicate with the original 750 Tracker and 750 Display.
