During the Hardscape North America (HNA) tradeshow, the top hardscape projects in the United States and Canada were recognized.

The HNA Awards include projects such as outdoor kitchens, patios, driveways, commercial plazas, residential walkways and more. Projects built between Nov. 1, 2014, and June 30, 2018, were eligible for the competition.

Also for the first time, vintage projects installed before 2008 were eligible for HNA Awards. A record number of entries, 155, were received this year. There were winners in 18 categories and 18 honorable mentions as well.

“It’s great to see that so many contractors are building really terrific hardscape projects,” says Kendall Anderegg, Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) chair. “Every year, the judging for this competition becomes more difficult. The winning projects showcase the industry’s best-of-the-best in hardscape design and construction. As an industry, we cannot be prouder of the contractors who are driving our industry forward with these creative, well-finished projects.”

NALP announces winners of 2018 Safety Recognition Awards

The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) acknowledged a number of landscaping companies for their commitment to safety with the annual Safety Recognition Awards.

NALP logoA total of 203 awards were earned over the time period of Jan. 1, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2018.

Categories included “No Vehicle Accidents,” “No Injuries or Illnesses” and “Overall Safety Achievement Award.” Companies that had participated in previous years could also compete in the “Most Improved” category. Click here for a full list of award recipients.

The “Best of the Best” award is for companies that have earned and maintained the “Overall Safety Achievement Award – Gold Level” status for the past three years. Below are the companies that won the “Best of the Best” this year:

  • Affiliated Grounds Maintenance Group, Inc. – Lake City, Pennsylvania
  • Alliance Landscape Co., LLC – Fort Worth, Texas
  • Arlington Lawncare & Landscape, Inc. – Lake City, Pennsylvania
  • Rushing Lawn and Landscaping, Inc. – Lorton, Virginia
  • Clarence Davids & Company – Plainfield, Illinois
  • Classic Landscapes, Inc. – Hampton, Georgia
  • Curby’s Lawn & Garden, LLC – Olathe, Kansas
  • Quality Lawn, Landscape, & Fence, Inc. – Casstown, Ohio
  • Trio Outdoor Maintenance, LLC – Mt. Clemens, Michigan
  • United Right-Of-Way – Phoenix, Arizona

NALP also reports that its Landscapes 2018 convention held in Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 16-19 was a success. New educational offerings brought in nearly 100 technicians attending the first-ever hands-on technical training workshops.

“It was an incredible week,” say Sabeena Hickman, NALP CEO. “We were pleased to welcome so many new faces to the conference, with an increase of 54 percent more first-time attendees than last year. We had great feedback on the new schedule, the joint keynote address, as well as the education sessions which were targeted at everyone from CEOs to technicians.”

Fundraising throughout the week and an auction hosted by Marty Grunder and Frank Mariani raised $100,000 to support the Industry Growth Initiative. The NALP also recognized 161 Awards of Excellence winners during its annual awards reception. Click here to see the complete list of winners.

ICPI launches Workforce Development Program for contractors

In response to the wide-spread need for skilled employees, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) launched a Workforce Development program to attract and train new installers and contractors.

icpi logoThe ICPI created a Workforce Development Special Committee in 2017 that worked on developing a strategy and plan that includes a career path, a boot camp training program, installer curriculum development and promotion of hardscape construction careers.

“We are all aware of the labor shortage in construction, and especially in our industry,” says Kendall Anderegg, ICPI chair. “Many contractors install both concrete pavers and segmental retaining walls. So, it makes good sense for the organizations to collaborate in helping new and existing installers and contractors gain the best possible, skills, education and experience.”

The Hardscape Installer/Contractor Career Path is the joint effort of ICPI and the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA).

ICPI’s boot camps will kick off December 2018 and other certifications and courses will start in 2019. Click here to see what all ICPI’s Hardscape Contractor Career Path will offer in the coming year.
