I stopped by our favorite children’s clothing store a week ago to buy something nice for our 3-year-old grandson. Those clerks always smile when they see me. I buy more than I intend to, and that was the case this time, too.
“I know that it’s difficult to imagine a mature landscape and how it’s going to look 15 or 25 years down the road.”
And, just like always, when I invited our daughter and Joseph over to see my treasures, every last piece was the wrong size. It always makes for an exciting trip back — it has come to be known as “Neil’s walk of shame.” As we parents soon learn to say, “Oh, well.”
So, when people make mistakes in choosing their plants, I really do understand. I know that it’s difficult to imagine a mature landscape and how it’s going to look 15 or 25 years down the road. Even professional designers have trouble doing that. You have to factor in the genetic potential for each plant’s size, its growth rate under the conditions you’ll be providing, and (most importantly) the space you have available in each part of your landscape.
