Keeping this outdoor room from going for a swim
Project: Private residence, Channahon, Illinois
Landscaping: K & D Landscape, Rockdale, Illinois
Overlooking the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, this refreshing pool and patio rests on a bluff 60 feet above the water line. But before being transformed into a breathtaking outdoor room, the backyard needed some added support – a $45,000 structural wall – to keep the landscape from sliding down the steep hillside. With the slope stabilized, John Algozzini and Kevin Manning of K & D Landscape (kd-landscaping.com) constructed a raised patio centered behind the pool, providing an airy sitting area with a waterfront view. The terrace had a custom pergola, sound system and grill unit tucked into one corner. For privacy, they installed 9-foot arborvitaes in the backdrop. Multi-level flowerbeds introduced pops of color and featured a dozen varieties, including Hypericum ‘Sunburst,’ Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood,’ Korean Spice Viburnum, Chicago Apache Daylily and Tiger Eye Sumac. They then used pottery and faux-wicker furniture as the finishing touches for this bucolic setting.
