Hardscape Winning Projects

Tirelessly laying pavers, leveling bases and creating a backyard retreat are all part of a successful hardscape project – something all of these landscapers can attest to. With nearly 200 reader-submitted photos for our Hardscape Photo Contest, here are the ones who won a spot in our magazine.

Basnight Land & Lawn, located in Chesapeake, Virginia, installed more than 30 pallets of Eagle Bay CottageStone pavers for this custom driveway.

When Decorative Landscape Borders’ clients wanted a dining area for eight, outdoor kitchen with grill and refrigerator, fire pit, sitting area, multiple planters, water feature, sand box and shed in a 80-by-15-foot space, they had their work cut out for them. Plus, they had to create all of this without damaging the existing trees. After 118 hours of using AutoCad and with numerous site visits, they created the backyard retreat their clients had envisioned.

Starting with a smaller patio that did not drain well, Dogwood Landscaping enlarged the area and installed a gas-burning fireplace that could also be used as a wood-burning fireplace by capping the gas line. This poolside spot is now the family’s favorite hangout.

Koskey’s Turf Management used more than 40 tons of base stone at this new home construction site. They also added concrete base material under all of the walls and pillars. To stabilize settling issues, they installed a StabiliGrid system under the stairs and pavers against the house foundation.

Long Bay Landscape Company used Belgard Hardscapes Lafitt patio slab and a reclaimed antique brick soldier course for an added unique dimension.

This outdoor living space was designed for lounging, playing basketball in the pool, going down a hidden slide and enjoying a cozy fire in the evening. RYCO Landscaping used natural stone and Belgard Hardscapes pavers to complete this project. They also added a Bluestone island in the pool, columns, firepit, seatwalls and a pool deck.

This Connecticut project started as a simple lawn with a play set. The English Lady Landscape transformed it to include an island paver patio with a firebowl – all surrounded by water, two waterfalls and a putting green. Perennial, tree and shrub bloom extend from early spring through the late fall and maintain winter beauty.

Located in Waccabuc, New York, this backyard posed hurdles with a steep slope, shallow soil depths, runoff problems and ledge rocks lurking below the surface. TRD Designs overcame these obstacles and created an outdoor area that appeared as an extension of the inside living space. The clients can gather under a mahogany-covered pergola, cook at the outdoor kitchen, swim in a 20-by-50-foot pool and warm up by the fire. More than 1,200 tons of ledge rock were removed from the site and shared with a neighbor.

Wasson Nursery designed and installed the patio around core-drilled Arkansas boulders. The detail-work took them three to four weeks to complete.
