Improvements Increase Usability and Reduce Maintenance Costs on JLG® Electric Scissor Lifts

Updated Sep 16, 2010

The Rental Show, 2008 – JLG Industries, Inc., an Oshkosh Truck Corporation company [NYSE: OSK] and a leading manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telescopic material handlers will show a number of improvements to their ES Series scissor lifts in Booth 6119 at The Rental Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 12 – 14, 2008.

JLG introduced the ES Series scissor lift line, a family of 5 electric powered machines, at The 2004 Rental Show. With their electric drive motors these machines provided longer duty cycles and higher capacities, and featured a unique hydraulic system design that combined the hydraulic pump, reservoir and motor with the lift cylinder into a single assembly that reduced or eliminated hydraulic leaks. Although widely accepted throughout the industry, JLG engineers have made those machines even better.

To improve operator interface, JLG has shortened the function-ready delay time to permit faster startup and eliminate having to re-boot the system if function is engaged before the system is ready. For easier operation of the machine™s deck extension, the u-shaped channel on each side of the deck extension has been redesigned to reduce the chance for debris to cause deck extension rollers to get hung up or jammed. In addition, the platform cable now features a coiled stinger to reduce the length of slack cable in the platform, and a curved cable hanger has been installed on the platform™s mid-rail to provide a means of securing the cable completely out of the operator™s workspace. Plated steel fasteners have also replaced plastic tie fasteners to hold the cable more securely.

For longer lasting operation, the machined and welded wheels have been replaced by cast steel wheels resulting in a heavier, thicker wheel that is more resistant to abuse. Drive motor cables have also been re-routed and provided with strain relief so that they are not subject to excessive flex and wear.

For ease of maintenance and increased machine uptime, a new on-board display is mounted beside and plugged into the analyzer port to provide instant feedback on machine status without requiring an analyzer. If a fault occurs, the digital display will show a diagnostic trouble code for the specific fault encountered. The display also provides a visual indicator of battery condition. The brake housing has also been made into a two-piece cover that provides more corrosion-resistance and is easier to service.

Another time and money saving improvement is the incorporation of a J.R. Merritt joystick that is considerably lower in cost yet is completely interchangeable with the PQ controller previously used.
