Komatsu America Corp. Launches New Motor Grader with Tier 3 Engine

Rolling Meadows, IL, November 13, 2006”Komatsu America Corp. today introduced the GD655-3 motor grader with Tier 3 engine.  The new machine has a variable horsepower of 180 HP to 200 HP, an operating weight of 33,951 pounds and a blade width of 12 feet or 14 feet for demanding applications.

The GD655-3 is equipped with the latest KomtraxTM technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure website utilizing wireless technology.  Data such as operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the web application for analysis.  The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiently and productively.

Features of the GD655-3 include:

  • Powerful Engine with Low Emissions

The GD655-3 is equipped with the new turbocharged and after cooled heavy duty

high-pressure common rail fuel injection Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 engine.  This powerful engine provides excellent traction with good fuel economy. The engine is EPA Tier 3 and EU stage 3A emissions certified.  Electronic overspeed protection helps prevent engine and transmission damage from premature downshifting and grade-induced acceleration.  Electronic transmission control produces smooth shifting with a single lever that controls the direction, speed and parking brake.

  • Power shift transmission

The new machine is also equipped with Komatsu™s power shift transmission.  Designed and built specifically for Komatsu graders, the transmission provides on-the-go, full power shifting as well as inching capability and automatic shifting in the higher ranges (4th through 8th).  Operators can choose between direct drive or torque converter drive.  If the job requires power for tough grading or low speed control, the operator can select the torque converter mode.  The operator can select direct drive for snow removal applications.  Eight forward speeds and four reverse speeds provide a wide operating range so the operator can precisely match working speeds to job conditions for maximum productivity.

  • Enhanced Working Environment for Increased Productivity

A working environment that provides exceptional visibility, low noise and operator comfort increases productivity in all grader applications.  The GD655-3 is equipped with

well positioned blade linkage that provides an unobstructed view of the moldboard and front tires, while a tapered engine hood provides good visibility of the rear of the machine.  The cab™s roomy interior includes extra leg and foot room as well as built-in storage space for personal items.  An easily adjustable suspension seat gives the operator optimal support and comfort.  For temperature control, strategically placed air conditioning vents keep the operator comfortable through a range of outside conditions.  In warmer weather, the operator can have cold air flow towards the back even when the front lower window is opened. The new motor grader is equipped with an electric throttle control so the operator can perfectly match the working condition by selecting between three modes.  An electronic monitoring system provides the operator with a warning should there be an abnormality.

  • Maintenance Made Easy

The GD655-3 was designed for easy service.  Service areas are easily accessible: large hinged doors provide easy access to the engine and radiator service points; lubrication points for the articulation joint are remote-mounted and the service meter is located in the electronic monitoring system.  The power train features a modular design which makes it easy to remove the engine, transmission or final drives independently for quick service.  Maintenance-free oil disc brakes are completely sealed and adjustment free.  A fully hydraulic brake system eliminates problems associated with air systems, while the large braking surface provides dependable braking capability and increased life before a rebuild is required.  When repairing the machine or checking batteries, a disconnect switch shuts off the electricity flow from batteries for safer inspection and maintenance.
