Cub Cadet lays off nearly 200 plant workers

MTD Cub Cadet’s Brownsville, Tennessee, facility laid off 180 people July 28, leaving 20 employees to man the plant through August.

Due to the economic recession, demand for MTD mowers and lawn equipment diminished. Plant general manager Greg Usery said the plant was profitable but had to be closed due to over-capacity at other MTD facilities.

MTD issued a letter on May 6 announcing the closing of the Browsnville plant on July 10, which was then extended until the end of the month. Post-August, 10 workers will be retained to run the distribution facility of the plant.

MTD is refraining from selling the building at this time. Last year, it closed its Canadian manufacturers, but retains eight North American plants and international plants in China, Germany and Hungary.
