An 18-year-old landscaper from North Reading, Massachusetts, had to have his leg extracted by firefighters after it was pinned between a tree and a running lawn mower on Friday, July 31.

The man lost control of the machine and fell down a wooded embankment along with the mower, according to North Reading Deputy Fire Chief Barry Galvin.

Firefighters arrived after 10:30 a.m. at a residential area near the Thomson Country Club. The man was an employee of ML Landscaping based in Lynn.

The landscaper’s left foot was cut while falling down the steep slope and his right leg was trapped between the commercial mower and a small tree. It took 15 minutes and the jaws of life to lift the mower.

He was transported by a MedFlight helicopter to the trauma center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
