Five words to say daily

Updated Sep 21, 2018

Words BlogYou talk to employees, clients, vendors and community members. But are you actually saying something meaningful?

Here are five-word sentences you should say to people every day.

1. “I appreciate all you do.”
A simple “thank you” can go a long way, so don’t forget to tell the people you work with that you appreciate them.

2. “What can we do differently?”
It’s only a matter of time until you have issues — either on the jobsite or internally. Instead of taking the role of a dictator, see what others around you think would fix the problem. Plus, by asking what “we” can do differently, you aren’t pointing the finger and causing the person to get defensive.

3. “How are you doing — really?”
If you ask someone how they are doing, chances are they will answer with a monotone, “Fine.” Take your conversations a step further to see how the person is really doing. Maybe that means asking them about their kids, what they did that weekend or the project they are working on. Not only does it show you care, but it will also strengthen the relationship.

4. “Do what makes you happy.”
Not only is this good advice to give, but it applies to you, as well. If someone is coming to you for help with a decision, sometimes it really is as easy as telling them to follow their heart. Life is too short not to be happy.

5. “What’s your opinion on it?”
Asking your employees or clients what they think about something shows you value their opinion. But, you have to take it a step further and actually listen to what they say. Don’t just ask to be polite — take their opinion seriously, even if it is different than yours.
