Don’t neglect trees during droughts

Turf receives a lot of attention during a drought, such as the one currently happening in California, but landscaping professionals should remember that trees in irrigated landscapes become dependent on regular watering. Consequently, like turf, they will also suffer the effects of less frequent – or nonexistent – watering.

Trees provide benefits that range from a healthier environment to increased home values, so keeping them healthy during a drought is important. Here are several ways to help ensure their survival:

  • Use a soaker hose or drip system to slowly water mature trees one to two times per month. Water toward the edge of the tree canopy, not at the base of the tree, and use a hose faucet timer to prevent overwatering.
  • Provide young trees with five gallons of water two to four times per week.
  • Refrain from over-pruning trees during drought.
  • Place 4-6 inches of mulch around trees to help retain moisture, which reduces water needs and protects trees.
