Team effort beautifies backyard
Private residence, Grand Blanc, Michigan
Landscaping installed by Shoemaker Services, Fenton, Michigan; Plants installed by homeowners

There was nothing “out-of-the-ordinary” about this subdivision home, and the homeowners wanted a more usable, relaxing space that was different from their neighbors’. To transform the sloping lawn into a functional outdoor living space, Shoemaker Services constructed a retaining wall, sitting walls and pillars using Unilock’s Brussels Dimensional System block, with complementary patio stone colors. A waterfall sets the mood for this cozy outdoor space. With direction, the homeowners selected and installed trees, shrubs and grasses to complete the overall extraordinary look.

Cross-country move calls for a makeover
Private residence, Calabasas, California
Landscaping designed and installed by The Green Scene, Canoga Park, California

The homeowners had recently moved to California from New York, and knew the backyard needed to be completely re-landscaped to allow them to enjoy the West Coast atmosphere. The result was a contemporary showplace complete with fireplace, outdoor kitchen, polished stone counters, walk-across-water features, stainless-steel sheer cascades and a remodeled pool.

Price: $200,000 total for front and backyards

Bigger is better
Private residence, Lakewood, Colorado
Landscaping designed and installed by Waikoa Landscape Design, Parker, Colorado

This job involved removing the old water feature and building a new one three times bigger using existing granite boulders. Because the lower pond is very visible from the patio, Filtrific skimmers were plumbed 30 feet away in a hidden mulch bed, yet remain accessible for maintenance. The old patio was removed and re-poured using a colored stamp mix.

Price: $39,000
