Hitachi has released the ZX17U-5 and the ZX26U-5 compact excavators. They are the smallest in the Hitachi line, but both excavators have a range of features to boost efficiency and productivity, including a variable width undercarriage and foldable blade on the ZX17U-5, and a swing boom and foldable travel pedals on the ZX26U-5. Both Dash-5 machines have a Tier 4 final engine that requires no diesel exhaust fluid.

The ZX17U-5 weighs 3,790 pounds and generates 14.5 horsepower. The ZX26U-5 ranges between 5,870 and 6,110 pounds in weight and delivers 20 horsepower. Both machines feature a manual wedge style coupler to simplify changing attachments.

Ease-of maintenance is addressed through the inclusion of a steel service door, side-by-side cooling cores, redesigned blade extension pins and a wider operator station.

Hitachi kept safety in mind with the cab design, including a ROPS-certified canopy. For the ZX26U-5, a ROPS cab option is available that is heated and has a large front window to boost visibility.
