Terex Corp. has named John L. Garrison Jr. as its new president and chief executive officer, effective Nov. 2. He replaces Ronald M. DeFeo, who will continue to serve as executive chairman of the company through Dec. 31. DeFeo also will serve as a consultant for Terex through the end of next year.

Garrison will become a member of the company’s board of directors the same day he takes over as CEO.

Garrison joins Terex from Textron, where he served as president and CEO of the Bell Helicopter segment. Before that, he led Textron’s industrial segment and E-Z-GO. He was also president and CEO at Azurix, held senior leadership positions at Case and served as an officer in the U.S. Army.

“John is a proven leader with considerable experience across a variety of industries,” said David Sachs, Terex lead director.

Garrison is a 1982 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and earned an MBA at the Harvard Business School. He will be based at the Terex headquarters in Westport, Connecticut.

While landscapers know Terex primarily through its compact construction equipment, the company operates in several business segments, including aerial work platforms, construction, cranes, material handling and port solutions, and materials processing.
