New overtime rule will be topic of Labor Department webinar

department-of-labor-sealRepresentatives from the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor (DOL) will cover the basics of the new federal overtime rule in a webinar scheduled for Oct. 17. The one-hour session begins at 11 a.m. EDT.

DOL staff will highlight resources and guidance available to employers and answer questions about complying with the new rule. You can register for the webinar here.

Doubling the salary required for an employee to be exempt from overtime pay, the new federal overtime rule became final on May 18; however, it doesn’t go into effect until Dec. 1. Before the rule change, an employee had to make at least $23,660 to be exempt from overtime regulations. The new rule changes that threshold to $47,476.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), working alongside numerous other business groups, has pushed for a phasing in of the new regulation. That seems unlikely without congressional action – and even then a veto would be likely – so NALP is encouraging its members to be prepared to implement the new standard on Dec. 1.

In alerting NALP members about Monday’s webinar, the association said DOL encourages participants to submit their questions in advance. Those questions can be emailed to the following address: [email protected].
