Pantone recently reached a decision on 2018’s Color of the Year: Ultra Violet.
Pantone describes this color as, “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade,” and the company believes that this color communicates ingenuity, originality and visionary thinking that points to the future.
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Pantone says that this color is known for representing things that are complex and contemplative, and it suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the discoveries beyond where we are now and the intrigue of what lies ahead.
Pantone says that the bright vibrancy of Ultra Violet enacts the same feelings associated with the night sky, symbolizing infinite possibilities and offering inspiration to explore the world.
Associated with the late musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimmy Hendrix, enigmatic purples typically symbolize counterculture, artistic brilliance and unconventionality.
Pantone says that Ultra Violet is nuanced and full of emotion, and the color, “symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”
Ultra Violet, Pantone says, is usually synonymous with spiritual and mystical qualities, and it has been associated with practices that are meant to help one seek refuge from the over stimulation of today’s culture.
Purple-toned lighting has been known to be present in many meditation spaces to help energize participants, as well as inspire connection.
