Stihl recently announced its newest lineup of gas-powered chain saws and pole pruners.

MS 400 C-M

Designed for the most demanding tree care and forestry professionals, Stihl says the MS 400 C-M has a magnesium alloy piston, a first in the chain saw industry.

The company says this magnesium alloy piston provides 13 percent greater displacement, increased power and more torque without adding additional weight. Stihl says this chain saw also includes Stihl M-Tronic engine technology to deliver low-emission, fuel-efficient performance under all operating conditions.

The company says its lifetime HD2 air filter means you simply clean it instead of replacing it, while a pre-separation system removes large debris before it even gets to the air filter, thus increasing run time between cleanings.

Other specs include:

  • Displacement: 4.1 in.
  • Engine power: 5.4 bhp
  • Weight: 12.8 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity: 20.3 oz.
  • Oil capacity: 11 oz.
  • Guide bar length: 16” to 25”
  • MSRP: $869.99 w/ 20” guide bar and chain

MS 500i

Designed and built exclusively for forestry personnel and tree service professionals, Stihl says the MS 500i is the first-ever chain saw on the worldwide market with electronically controlled fuel injection.

The company says the injection (i) technology enables the MS 500i to achieve rapid acceleration. Stihl says this technology combined with the easy-starting procedure and power-to-weight ratio allows users to get to work quickly.

“The Stihl injection (i) technology delivers rapid acceleration of the saw chain from 0 to 62 mph in a quarter of a second,” says John Allen, product manager for Stihl, Inc. “That acceleration combined with one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any chain saw on the market make the MS 500i an impressive piece of equipment for professionals looking to take on tree felling, bucking or delimbing operations.”

The company says the MS 500i chain saw packs professional power into a lightweight package with precise electronically controlled fuel injection for optimal performance.

Stihl says there’s a simplified starting procedure that requires users to push the primer bulb and pull the starter cord to start the chain saw, with no need for a choke.

The company says built-in pressure and internal temperature sensors measure atmospheric pressure, external air temperature and engine temperature on startup and during operation to auto-adjust for operating conditions.

Stihl says a lightweight chain sprocket cover with captive bar nuts provides cover for the chain saw sprocket, while the captive bar nuts are held securely in place. The company adds that a unique bumper spike design adjusts the tooth length of the bumper spikes to account for the curved contours of trees, allowing the saw to bite into the wood and ensure optimal performance regardless of what species of tree that’s being cut.

The company says a new generation MDG 1 Diagnostic Software tracks performance with error memory, allowing dealers to quickly identify where service might be needed, and an anti-vibration system minimizes vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment.

Stihl says its Ematic lubrication system, when used with the Stihl OILOMATIC saw chain, provides proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods, and a side-access chain tensioner makes saw chain maintenance easy.

The company says the machine features toolless fuel and oil filter caps with retainers that make refueling and adding oil easy, and the ElastoStart starter handle is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord.

Stihl says the optional wrap handle version (R) allows the chain saw to be used in multiple positions for felling or limbing with hands in the proper positions.

The company says the HD2 air filter is washable, and the large surface area allows for longer run times between cleanings and high performance, even while operating in dusty and dry conditions. Stihl adds that the decompression valve vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting.

Stihl says a high output adjustable automatic oiler can supply additional lubrication if needed for longer guide bars and/or dry or dusty cutting conditions when used with Stihl OILOMATIC saw chain and Stihl Ematic guide bars.

The company says the quarter-turn lock on air filter shroud also provides quick access so users can quickly and efficiently service the chain saw with minimal downtime on the job.

Other specs include:

  • Displacement: 4.83 in.
  • Engine power: 6.7 bhp
  • Weight: 14.8 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity: 26.05 oz.
  • Oil capacity: 11 oz.
  • Guide bar length: 16” to 36”
  • MSRP: MS 500i w/25” bar and chain: $1,319.991
  • MSRP: MS 500i R w/25” bar and chain: $1,359.991

MS 661 Magnum, MS 661 R Magnum

Stihl says the MS 661 Magnum and MS 661 R Magnum chain saws are equipped with a fuel-efficient engine and low maintenance air filtration system, and the anti-vibration management system reduces operator fatigue and improves handling compared to the previous model, MS 660.

“The MS 661 Magnum and 661 R Magnum have a simple, proven and non-electronic carburetor design, providing versatility for a range of professional use, with smooth handling even when using long guide bars,” says Allen.

The company says the anti-vibration system minimizes user fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience by reducing the vibration levels of the chain saw.

With toolless fuel and oil caps, Stihl says users can lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten, and the side-access chain tensioner requires only a bar wrench for adjustments.

The company says the decompression valve vents compress in the cylinder for easier starting, and it temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking to help reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Stihl says the HD2 air filter provides better engine protection compared to standard filters, and its washable capability yields extremely long filter life and lowers maintenance costs. The company says the large surface area allows for longer run times between cleanings and high performance, even while operating in dusty and dry conditions.

Stihl says the ElastoStart starter handle includes a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord, and the adjustable automatic oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.

Additionally, Stihl says the wrap handle (R) allows for maneuverability and versatility in cutting positions.

Other specs include:

  • Displacement: 5.56 in.
  • Engine power: 7.2 bhp
  • Weight: 16.8 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity: 28.7 oz.
  • Oil capacity: 13.5 oz.
  • Guide bar length: 16” to 36”
  • MSRP: MS 661 Magnum: $1,289.99 with 25” bar and chain
  • MSRP: MS 661 R Magnum: $1,329.99 with 25” bar and chain
