Faced with an epic drought that is not expected to end anytime soon, Californians under mandatory water use restrictions are exploring a myriad of water-saving strategies, including removal of the lush green lawns the state has become known for.

But transitioning from green grass to more a drought-tolerant landscape can be expensive. Some California landscapers are stepping in to help ease the burden. Paul Helen, general manager of Modesto Landscapes in Modesto, California, offers customers free yard removal when they chose to install a drought-resistant landscape.

“About two years ago, I was talking to a customer, and they wanted to know what they could do to save water,” Paul Helen, general manager of Modesto Landscapes in Modesto, California, told The Huffington Post. “And off the cuff I said, ‘You’re doing something good, so I’ll do something good for you too.'”

Turf Terminators in Los Angeles County works with homeowners to take advantage of a lawn-removal rebate program. The company offers free lawn removal and installation of a drought-resistant landscape in exchange for the rights to collect the rebate money. Since last summer, the company has replaced more than 3,000 lawns.
