IA to hold another drought summit, with groundwater group’s help

irrigation-associationThe Irrigation Association will present another drought summit in conjunction with this year’s Irrigation Show and Education Conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 2016 summit will be staged in partnership with the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) and is scheduled for Dec. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 2016 Irrigation Association Education Conference is Dec. 5-9, while the Irrigation Show itself is Dec. 7-8.

While 2016 brought some relief to the Western drought, many areas are still experiencing historic water shortages, with no reprieve in sight. From the Colorado River to Lake Mead, water supplies are shrinking while demand increases, thus driving water users to look elsewhere for their water, in many cases underground.

Last year, the Irrigation Association played host to its first drought summit in conjunction with the 2015 Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Long Beach, California.

This year’s summit will focus on technologies for a sustainable future, looking at both irrigation and aquifer storage and recovery. After discussing these technologies as solutions to long-term water management plans, the summit will culminate with five perspectives from different states on how each has dealt with drought and ensuring sustainable water supplies.

The summit is open to all IA and NGWA attendees and exhibitors.

Among the speakers scheduled for this year’s summit are the following: John Farner, IA; Kevin McCray, NGWA; Pat Mulroy (featured speaker), University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Law, who will discuss “Technology for a Sustainable Water Future”; Tim Parker of Parker Groundwater on aquifer storage and recovery; and Inge Bisconer of Toro Co. on irrigation technologies.

A question and answer session will be held prior to a series of panel discussions on topics such as drought and water management, drought in the West, and a discussion titled “Thirsty Land.”
