Is stress killing us?
As I dug into my spring-maintenance work mowing the lawn, spraying weeds and waiting for my plants to bloom, I was entranced by two bees buzzing around my garden. Although these busy bugs seem to have a fairly simple life — hanging around flowers and honey all day — I’ve found it might not be […]

Project Seeks to Harvest Fog for Irrigation
The man-made mist is part of an effort to help slum-dwellers in Peru harvest moisture from the air. With a small grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, UW students and professors are building and testing fog catchers – and hoping to reel in a bigger grant to mount a full-scale operation in Lima. “It’s like a cold sauna in here,” UW ecologist and civil engineer Susan Bolton said recently, ducking into the plastic “hoop house,” where industrial-grade misters spewed out a cloud of fine water droplets. A noisy exhaust fan drew the cloud through a drape of black plastic netting.

Bright Future on the Horizon?
Here’s what the numbers and pros are forecasting for the industry. I’m a skeptic. But maybe that comes with being in the media profession. So when I hear the economy is on the mend, I look for the proof. One of the signs of recovery for the landscape industry starts with construction and the housing-market […]

Do Plants Cost Too Much?
Plants are a key element of almost everything we do. If you look back through the blog you will see plants I love and plants I hate. However, plants often surprise clients who are new to landscaping. Not how great they are, but how expensive they are! Here in Oregon, a typical 1 gallon shrub […]

Where is Technology Headed?
Cassettes are replaced by CDs, which are almost outdated now because of iTunes. Hybrids are no longer seen as an “out-there” car idea, and LCD screens have become a common feature on equipment. So what’s on the horizon for technology? It’s definitely not flying cars, space houses and other Jetson-like ideas if our current focus […]

Dos & don’ts of online audience growth
Every landscaping company has a goal. In fact, every company most likely has several goals. Charts, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, meetings, agendas and conferences all enable a company to achieve goals. But let’s think outside of the box for a minute. What about setting some intangible goals, like social media? Have you ever thought about having […]
